Mechanical Engineer

FULL-TIME | UK & ARCTIC | ENGINEERING

THE VISION

Our mission is to build technology to open Earth’s final frontier. A vast expanse 1.5 times the size of the US, the Arctic is seeing geopolitical, climatic, and economic activity skyrocket. We provide clarity to this complexity — while ensuring minimal impact in the planet’s most fragile wilderness.

Built off the back of a team with 30+ years of polar experience, we recognise that autonomy is fundamental to operational success. Working at the fringes of technological capabilities, this is a company that aims high and takes bets. If you want to deploy ground-up technology with real-world impact - at an inflection point in history that won’t reappear - we want you at ARD.

THE ROLE

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Arctic Research and Development, you are responsible for the design, fabrication and deployment of field-ready Arctic hardware. With a focus on cold-accustomed energy systems, cutting-edge communications platforms, and surface/sub-surface autonomous systems, the role ensures hardware reliability in the harshest climate on Earth through rigorous testing and a deep understanding of materials.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, test, and deliver Arctic-ready hardware from the first sketch to field deployment of ARD’s product-line

  • Conduct non-destructive evaluation (incl. cold-chamber testing) and in-depth mech. analysis

  • Interface with vendor or in-house fabrication and assembly teams during hardware development

  • Supervise integration with multidisciplinary engineering teams (systems, software, GIS, RF)

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for project teams, offering guidance on vital system aspects such as Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS)

  • Travel to the Arctic for R&D field testing and meetings with industry representatives

  • Enforce quality assurance protocols to maintain compliance with industry standards

  • Ensure all solutions adhere to safety protocols and necessary governmental guidelines

WHAT WE VALUE

  • 5+ years in 3D CAD experience (Siemens NX, Unigrahics, SolidWorks, or similar) managing timelines, resources, and budget to deliver projects within scope and on-time

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field with a portfolio of high-fidelity hardware development and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)

  • A strong experience with thermal and mechanical simulation tools (ANSYS, or similar)

  • Hands-on experience and knowledge of mechanical design principles, NDE materials inspection/testing, and the ability to convey to industry specialists/clients

  • Experience and understanding of working with multi-disciplinary engineering teams

  • The ability to operate with autonomy, take initiative, and consistently deliver high-quality, reliable solutions while showcasing a unified dedication to the mission

  • Readiness to operate in safe but cold environments while conducting R&D prototype field tests

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Stock options and a competitive compensation

  • A focus on deliverables and impact, not by hours logged.

  • Relocation support
